My Story
I grew up in a family of restaurateurs and gardeners that held a deep appreciation for the connections among food, community, and the land. I was drawn to winemaking for the same reasons. Wine brings people together, it showcases the unique aspects of terroir, and its flavors and aromas have the power to evoke compelling memories.

I started my career in the Awatere Valley of Marlborough, New Zealand, in 2011. What began as a one-year adventure to learn more about the country’s sustainable practices soon became a much longer exploration of a beautiful place, its wonderful people, and the distinctive wines it produces. I moved from the lab into oenology and winemaking roles, earning a Graduate Diploma in Viticulture & Oenology from Lincoln University. Then, after 8 years abroad, I returned to the States and landed in Washington State, where I’ve since enjoyed making wines throughout the Columbia Valley.

In 2023 I started Upwind Wines as a celebration of lighter-bodied wines with pure varietal expression. I aim to craft wines that embody the essence of the land and offer a fresh, vibrant perspective on Washington wines. As a nod to my previous experience in Marlborough and Washington, I centered the first vintage on my two favorite varieties. The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc were released in Spring 2025.

The Inspiration behind Upwind
The name Upwind was inspired by the journey I followed from growing up in Wisconsin, working and studying in New Zealand, and eventually returning to make wine in the Pacific Northwest. It reflects both the physical winds that have shaped the land and agriculture of each region as well as the metaphorical winds that led me on this adventure. The wines aim to embody the kinetic energy of a lively spirit and its potential for growth and perseverance.
Watercolor Artist
Katie Huston
Katie and I met while working together on Red Mountain. A talented artist and fellow winemaker, Katie earned an Associates Degree in Wine Production from Northwest Wine Academy in Seattle. Drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of Lake Michigan, New Zealand, and her own native PNW, Katie painted the beautiful watercolors that grace the labels of Upwind wines.

When she's not painting or making wine, you'll find Katie on an adventure to a mountain lake or cooking and enjoying fabulous food and wine.
